MANITOWOC — The Manitowoc Police Department is on the cutting edge of technology and has a new eye in the sky as it uses a drone to enhance law enforcement and public safety efforts.
Manitowoc Police held drone demonstration for media on Tuesday, October 17th.
The drone is equipped with Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) camera technology and video transmitting capabilities. This is a fantastic benefit to law enforcement when it comes to searching for lost people in hazardous terrain, low light conditions or heavily wooded areas,” said Police Chief Nick Reimer. “Think about how much cheaper it is to fly a drone for hours upon hours, crisscrossing a search grid as compared to flying a helicopter or plane for that same amount of time.”
In June 2017, the department purchased a drone using forfeited funds from a fraud case.
Already, the drone has searched the river bank for burglary evidence, searched Lincoln Park and surrounding area for a wanted individual in a physical abuse of a child case and searched the lakeshore area for an autistic child that was reported missing.
